The Benefits of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for Children

As a parent and the founder of North Shore Hyperbarics, I've often encountered questions about children using hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT). My personal journey with my son, Avery, has given me a unique perspective on this topic, which I'm eager to share with other parents exploring HBOT for their children.

The Early Introduction of Avery to HBOT

Avery's HBOT journey began when he was just six weeks old, and since then, he's completed over 20 sessions (he is currently just under 1 years old). One of the main reasons I was so eager to get Avery in the HBOT was due to the potential to help his heal and seal his gut lining, and to make sure his gut microbiome is balanced. The chamber is also good for subtle detoxing - which, as a mother, makes me feel more comfortable since I know that I cannot protect him from everything (like the environmental toxins all around us).

Throughout Avery’s 20 sessions, I've observed noticeable improvements in his teething pain, gas and stomach pains, irritability, and his skin rashes. These changes have been both reassuring and a testament to the potential benefits of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for children. I have also noticed that Avery looks forward to his chamber time. He runs up to the chamber and asks to be put in it. When I climb in, he immediately assumes his cuddling position and is ready to relax. He knows that the chamber makes him feel good.

Addressing Common Concerns: Ear Pressure in Children

One of the challenges of using HBOT with young children is managing ear pressure as the chamber pressurizes. To help Avery with this, I found that nursing him during pressurization naturally helped clear his ears. Other effective methods include:

  • Sucking on a Pacifier or Bottle: This can help infants equalize ear pressure.

  • Chewing or Eating: Older children may find chewing snacks or a sucker helpful.

  • Swallowing: Encouraging swallowing can also assist in balancing ear pressure.

Safety and Individualized Care

While my experience with Avery has been positive, it's crucial to approach HBOT with careful consideration and under professional guidance. Each child is unique, and their experience with HBOT can vary. At North Shore Hyperbarics, safety and comfort are our top priorities, especially for our younger clients.

Conclusion

The use of HBOT in pediatric care, though less common, holds potential benefits. It’s about understanding each child's needs and tailoring the therapy accordingly.
